UPDATE: If you want the version for 10.6 Snow Leopard, click here.
From the project site, the “VMware View Open Client lets you connect from a Linux desktop to remote Windows desktops managed by VMware View”
We work with a bunch of Mac clients that also need the same ability. I was able to get it compiled and working on OSX (Intel based) with a few minor issues. I’ve had a number of requests for the compiled package and have finally been able to post it (sorry for the delay).
This is the README that I’ve included with the package:
VMware-view-open-client_3.1.0-169073
This is the VMWare View Open Client installer package. The .pkg file is the Mac installer. The application was compiled on an Intel MacBook Pro running OSX 10.5. It may work on other OS versions, your mileage may vary.
The vmware-client.toc is the table of contents of all the files that are installed onto the machine when the package is run. The .app is a very simple AppleScript that just calls /usr/local/bin/vmware-view.sh. The rdesktop switches can be modified within this shell script. You’ll want to modify the switch that specifies the broker for your site.
The rdesktop binary is installed with this application for ease of use
though you may want to strip it out.Current known issues:
Sound: I’ve not been able to get sound to pass through from the virtual machine back to the Mac.
Alt Key: The alt key mapping seems to work however a combination such as ALT-F4 to close a window within the VM does not work.
I provide no warranty and am not liable for its use or any potential problems resulting from its use.

Hi,
I’ve downloaded and installed your client on Snow Leopard. Installation is smooth. Tried to connect to our View environment connection is established to the broker, can select a connection, but then nothing happens.
Will investigate further and let you know.
i have the same problem as reported by “jansm”. i will check if anyone else in my organization was able to make it work on Snow Leopard and report if there are any workarounds.
k, i did some troubleshooting and found the following causing the no screen to pop-up..
when you the vmware-view.sh from the command line after authentication and selecting the pool your desktop is on the script/app fails with following errors:
Starting usb redirection to ’1.1.2.2:32111′ with ticket ’539ca04f-7705-41c4-b7d1-e70fd41a447a’.
Relative or system path /usr/local/bin/vmware-view-usb does not exist.
/usr/bin/vmware-view-usb was not found; disabling USB redirection.ASSERT procHelper.cc:129
ASSERT procHelper.cc:129
Same issue as Jansm. Any success yet on Snow Leopard? No point reinventing the wheel if somebody else has figured it out
Hello,
ron.peterro.com – da best. Keep it going!
Thanks
Glad to see some use being made of the work. I hope we can get it working. Thanks for the feedback.
A couple comments here. I haven’t upgraded to Snow Leopard yet so I can’t help there. Also our view environment was up only for a proof of concept and won’t be up again for a while for more testing. For what it’s worth, I also don’t have the vmware-view-usb on my laptop.
Unfortunately I am unable do put my password in the passwordfield…
I do remember seeing that there was no feedback (dots or asterisks) when putting in the password, but I never had a problem with it not working.

For translation: I cannot see a real login after selecting the view desktop!
If you need a View Environment to test against it I can provide you a “standard” desktop! Please let me know how I can help.
I’m using Snow Leopard as well – but I cannot programm! I am not a good developer!
Let me know how I can help.
It sounds like a common theme for those running this package with 10.6. I’ve since upgraded to 10.6 and am working my way through compiling it but have run into a snag. I’ve posted the problem to the discussion group and am waiting for a response from someone more knowledgeable than I. I should have a view environment available for testing in the near future but thanks for the offer. First I need to get the application compiled.
Once that is done, I plan on posting that package as well.

Hi,
I used OS X 10.5.8 and i’m not able to put the password in the password field also.
Any new client update to download ?
What I had seen was that there was no feedback for the password field but it still worked. Is that not the case with you?
I am working on compiling the latest release on 10.6. Hopefully I’ll be able to post that soon.
Anything new about 10.6 version??? I can’t wait to be able to test again! Tell me if you need support.
If you’re willing to test and review the version, I’ll send you the link. I sent you email, please respond to that.
Thanks.
Any idea when the new client will be out for Snow Leopard? As of right now the current download doesn’t seem to work for me. I get this error.
“starting usb redirection to ’127.0.0.1:51544′ with ticket ‘\’.
Relative or system path /usr/local/bin/vmware-view-usb does not exist.
/usr/bin/vmware-view-usb was not found; disabling USB redirection.ASSERT procHelper.cc:129
ASSERT procHelper.cc:129″
Thanks
You’re not the only one with that problem. At this point I need a tester that will give a complete review as I don’t have a view environment at this time.
hi
i can test the client i have a mac os 10.6 and
a view 3.12 environment.
regards
dominik
I’d be willing to test your client. I have a permanent View 3.1 site and am running Snow Leopard 10.6.1
Thanks for the offers. I found a tester yesterday and am waiting for a review soonishly. If I don’t hear anything back, I’ll let you know.
No problem. If I could get a copy of the new build ASAP, that would also be a huge help for me
any news? Having a demo tomorrow again and would love to use the Mac OS Client instead of a virtual Thin Client OS with View Client.
I posted a new blog entry with a link to the new package: http://ron.peterro.com/?p=213
Sure, no problem.
I also get the same error message as commenter no 3.
What can I do?
Please be a bit more specific. Which error? Also, what OS are you running and which package did you install?
How do I uninstall?
Sorry, I don’t have an uninstaller. You could just remove the application from the menu and remove the files from /usr/local manually.
